Internet of Things: When will it be a business reality?

Padmasree Warrior, the CTO of Cisco, tweeted this question pointing to this article on the Business Opportunity for the Internet of Things.

Took the liberty to post this here. I thought this question is a good followup to couple of posts I have made on IoT related technologies here (Pervasive Computing) and here (Near Field Communications).

My answer to the question is that it is already a business reality in a many cases.

Couple of examples that I am familiar with I can point to. One is a solar trash can that calls out to a web server for a pick up only when it is full. More on that here: http://www.bigbellysolar.com/news/135/city-trash-cans-go-solar-wireless-save-big-bucks-garbage-trucks.

Another example is a nanotechnology and bluetooth based solution by Bilcare to prevent counterfeit drugs targeted at pharma manufacturers and retailers. More on this here.

I am sure there are many other real world examples of IoT adoption. Please share examples of IoT products/solutions you have developed or come across.
